1. Topsail Island
| |
|
Idyll-by-the-Sea Two is located within the gated community of Ocean Sound Village, in the
town of North Topsail Beach, on Topsail Island -- a 26-mile long barrier island
located between Wilmington NC (35 miles) and Jacksonville NC (20 miles).
There are three towns on Topsail Island:
- Surf City (middle) est. 1948
- Topsail Beach (southern) est. 1963
- North Topsail Beach (northern) est. 1990
Two bridges access the island. A swing bridge in Surf City,
and a high-rise bridge that connects North Topsail Beach to the mainland (Sneads Ferry area).
There is a single major north/south road running the entire length of the island for
around 21.5 miles, with side streets to the ocean and/or to the Intracoastal Waterway.
Occasionally there is a road that parallels the major north/south road on wider areas
of the island.
There is a wonderful book by Ray McAllister on the history of the island called
Topsail Island: Mayberry By The Sea.
Visit http://www.mayberrybythesea.com for more information.
Latest News: Nights in Rodanthe, A Warner Brothers release, starring
Richard Gere and Diane Lane, filmed a few hundred yards down the beach
from Idyll-by-the-Sea, will be released 3 October 2008 OR
September 12, 2008.

"North Shore is among the best-conditioned courses in the Topsail Island area,
with a four-star rating from Golf Digest --
the only coastal Carolina 4-Star golf course as rated by Golf Digest
and located just one mile from Idyll.
This course has 6866 yards, a 73.1
rating and a slope of 135, with water coming into play on 10 of the 18 holes.
Thick bermuda grass fairways and well-bunkered bent grass greens place a premium
on accurate shots. This course is quite popular with Raleigh and Triangle-area
golfers, who come down to spend a day or two on the coast. The course is built
on both sides of N.C. Highway 210, and an underground tunnel connects the two
sides of the course. North Shore is lined with homes and tall pine trees.
Golfers can sometimes be surprised and amused with alligator sightings in the
course waterways.
The ninth hole is memorable for its required 250-yard tee shot -- anything less
is in the drink. Greens fees, including a cart, range from $40 to $60, and
reservations can be made up to a year in advance with a credit card. A reservation
of less than two days in advance doesn't require a credit card. Driving range,
putting green, professional lessons, club repairs and custom fitting are
available. A clubhouse, bar and snack bar are on the premises."

"Belvedere is a narrow, par 72, 18-hole course with small greens
and water hazards. The length is 6059 yards with a slope of 125.
Hole 3 stands out for its carry over water to an elevated green.
Greens fees range from $25 to $45, depending on the season and
time of day. Fees include range balls and state-of-the-art golf
carts equipped with a GPS system and a 10" computer screen. Yardage,
water hazards and all the other information a golfer needs can be
displayed on the computer screen with a push of a button. Players
can also use the system to order food or check on the latest sports
scores. Reservations are available and can be made far in advance.
Belvedere has a small pro shop, clubhouse and driving range on the
premises. It offers PGA professional lessons and three- to four-day
golf schools with accommodations provided. Tennis courts and a
restaurant are also available on site."

"Topsail Greens is an 18-hole, 6200-yard, par 71 course featuring
player-friendly, tight fairways, sand bunkers and several holes with
water hazards. The 17th hole, a 159-yard with a par 3, is an island
green playable only by a small bridge. The greens, similar to those
designed by Donald Ross, are cleverly contoured in a way that allows
a misplayed shot to roll off the putting surface. Greens fees range
from $20 to $40 depending on the time of day and season. Fees include
a cart. Reservations are accepted. A pro shop, snack bar, putting green
and chipping green are on the premises."

"Olde Point is a mature, traditional course, opened in 1975 and designed
by Jerry Turner. Featuring tree-lined fairways, scenic ponds and lakes, this
18-hole, par 72 course is 6253 yards with a slope of 120. Greens fees range
from $30 to $50 depending on the season and time of day. Fees include a cart.
A reserved starting time is required. The 11th hole is a long, narrow,
589-yard par 5 with a gradual dogleg right that slopes laterally downward to
the right into the woods and consistently defies players' depth perception.
It has been recognized by amateurs and professionals alike as one of the
toughest in the area. Olde Point offers a pro shop, clubhouse, driving range,
restaurant and snack bar."

Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.
The Topsail Turtle Project was organized by Karen Beasley, as she saw the need
to preserve and protect the SEA TURTLE nests, nesting females and hatchlings on
the 26 miles of coastline on Topsail Island. After Karen's untimely death,
the torch was passed on to her mother, Jean Beasley, today the Executive
Director of both the nesting program and the rehabilitation center.
The dream of a rehabilitation center was realized through the tireless efforts
of the Beasley family; their financial support; the support of the project members;
and the generous donations of money, time and material from local residents,
businesses and visitors.
